David Jones Sydney Flagship Store Major Refurbishment
Scope of work
The project was the full refurbishment of all eight floors of the flagship store costing in excess of $100M. Our scope was to set up enclosed hoardings to form tunnels from the ground floor entrances to the escalators, so shoppers could access other floors whilst construction was underway below. Over the period of the project, BSG hoarded up the escalator voids on all floors and installed a large number of hoardings to separate the public from construction zones.
The cost of the works was circa $330k over 14 months.
Works Included
Internal Titan hoarding around the escalator voids, retailers, lift shafts, and entrances
Custom-built hoarding to create tunnels for customers to access escalators
Lighting and emergency lighting installed to the tunnels
A number of temporary hoardings used for site set up and demolition of tenancies
Multiple modifications and movements on a regular basis
Works included site measures, drawings, installation, modifications and removal of hoardings

CHALLENGES
The challenges we faced were that the site was a live and active working environment and also fully stocked department store with expensive and fragile items. We had to take extra special care to keep the works clean and safe from doing any damage.
This work needed to be top-quality and presented as cleanly and neatly as possible, even though we had to move them around almost every night to allow for construction works to take place.
OUTCOME AND IMPACT
The project was a success and we managed to juggle a lot of moving parts and ever changing schedules to get the works done safely and to the high standard of David Jones.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATIONS
The hoardings on the ground floor were enclosed, so they created a tunnel for customers to walk through. There was, however, construction happeniing above them, so they needed to be built as impact hoardings that would ensure the safety of the customers below. The hoardings were designed and certified by structural engineers and had electrical lighting and emergency lighting installed throughout.
