GPT – Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre
Services NSW Relocation
Scope of work
Services NSW, formerly known as the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), have been a long-time tenant of the Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre. The scope was to relocate them to a new site on the newly-constructed side of the centre.
Works Included
The work was to defit four retail tenancies and reconfigure the space to accommodate the new Services NSW site within the Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre. This included demolition of the concrete block walls and removing services such as Electrical and Fire to make the site ready for the new space to be fitted out.
Other related works included upgrading the centre’s fire smoke baffle system to compensate for the new ceiling space being built into the new site.

CHALLENGES
The challenges we faced were mostly handling and controlling noisy and dusty works in a live environment, while working to a very tight timeline keeping the public and contractors safe.
We also faced challenges with the removal of the escalators and the infilling of the concrete slab, as well as building the structural steel elements designed by the engineers on suspended slabs in an operating shopping centre environment.
OUTCOME AND IMPACT
The project was a success and we hit our targets on all three stages. The client was happy with how we managed the project and kept discrete with minimal impact to their shoppers and retailers alike.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATIONS
We had to upgrade the fire system and smoke baffles to combat the building’s design, as the Services NSW specification impacted the original fire safety design. To do this, we had to increase the depth of the smoke screens throughout the mall to counteract the smoke impact.
